Vehicle to Internet communications using the ETSI ITS GeoNetworking protocol
نویسندگان
چکیده
Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs) allow the exchange of information between vehicles to improve road safety. In addition, vehicles can be connected to the Internet through gateways placed alongside the roads, which allow drivers to use common Internet services and new applications specifically oriented to them. The ETSI TC ITS has standardized the architecture and the communication protocols for an Intelligent Transport System (ITS), considering both safety applications and communications with the Internet. The GeoNetworking protocol (GN) has been designed to forward packets inside the VANET taking safety requirements as the main concern. This paper analyzes the GeoNetworking protocol (GN) focusing on the provision of Internet connectivity to vehicles. The main contributions of this work are the identification of sources of performance losses when using the GN protocol in communications with Internet and the proposal of different mechanisms to improve its performance in this type of communications. The evaluation of the GN protocol and the proposed improvements is conducted by means of extensive simulations. Copyright c © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Towards the Usage of MBT at ETSI
In 2012 the Specialists Task Force (STF) 442 appointed by the European Telcommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) explored the possibilities of using Model Based Testing (MBT) for test development in standardization. STF 442 performed two case studies and developed an MBT-methodology for ETSI. The case studies were based on the ETSI-standards GeoNetworking protocol (ETSI TS 102 636) and the Di...
متن کاملValidation and evaluation of NEMO in VANET using geographic routing
The combination of geographic-based routing protocols (GeoNetworking) and IPv6 NEtwork MObility (NEMO) into a single communication architecture (IPv6 GeoNetworking) is key in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET). While NEMO manages Internet access and session continuity between the vehicle and the Internet, geographically based data forwarding allows an efficient dissemination of the information b...
متن کاملGeonetworking solutions in V2V infrastructures
In vehicular applications based on Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) infrastructures, it is often desirable to address on location. Geonetworking could offer a great support to these vehicular applications by using location based addressing. Geonetworking can be split into two main parts, geographical addressing (geoaddressing) and geographical routing (georouting). Several geonetworking solutions are a...
متن کاملIPv6 address autoconfiguration in geonetworking-enabled VANETs: characterization and evaluation of the ETSI solution
In this article we make a thorough characterization and evaluation of the solution standardized by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute for IPv6 transmission of packets over geographical location aware vehicular networks. In particular, we focus on IPv6 address auto-configuration, one of the required pieces to enable Internet connectivity from vehicles. Communications in vehicula...

This paper presents an analysis of the technical requirements for Internet Protocol (IP) and Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol to support Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) which is a critical element of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). This study classifies the DSRC applications into four categories: unicast vehicle-to-vehicle, unicast roadside-to-vehicle, broadcast veh...
